What is thought leadership content writing?

The term ‘thought leadership content’ may have you thinking about personal branding, influencers, or even (cough) Elon Musk.

It’s a way for experts in an industry to ‘establish themselves as an authoritative source for the information their audience finds valuable’, describes The New York Times, who delve further into this definition, and the vast benefits it offers, financially and otherwise.

For some time now, personal branding has become an increasingly trustworthy voice, offering authenticity, accessibility, and accountability that a wider brand can’t always provide. This is often where thought leadership is best placed to come from, with individuals having greater influence.

Do I even need to post on LinkedIn, or write thought leadership content?

Edelman (2025) reported that 75% of decision-makers say ‘thought leadership is a more trustworthy basis for assessing a company’s capabilities than traditional advertising or product marketing’.

LinkedIn is the go-to platform for readily available thought leadership content, but we’re in a funny place when it comes to personal branding on LinkedIn in the world of recruitment, B2B, and just about every other industry.

Every time you log on, you see post after post that goes something like this:

“I quietly turned down a £2m contract this week.

It’s real.

This isn’t about the money. It’s about who you become when you say no.

Not because we couldn’t deliver. Because I finally realised something bigger about what it means to build a business.

Here’s the thing nobody tells you about scaling a recruitment desk: it’s not about the placements. It’s about the trust you bank when nobody’s watching…”

If reading that makes you feel physically nauseous, join the club! LinkedIn may have introduced the AI Slop reporting button (despite its incessant promotion of AI features), but we’re still seeing this stuff. Who knew that there would come a day where I would prefer to read a “This is what X taught me about B2B sales” post.

However, thought leadership is clearly commercially valuable, and this is the key platform for it. Unfortunately, you’re actively hurting your business by not using it.

But I don’t have time for thought leadership content writing

You may be starting to understand the benefits, but you’re thinking:

  • I don’t have time for that!
  • I’m not a copywriter!

And we hear you! Dedicated time, and skillful copywriting and editorial are crucial to effective content.

Your expertise and authority are the value here, but communicating that effectively is the challenge.

It’s becoming more and more common for people to default to Claude to solve this. But, as we’ve already mentioned, it’s a false economy, turning people off by turning your expertise into slop.

How can a marketing agency help me with thought leadership?

A marketing agency can solve your time, and copywriting skill problem, but it’s essential they have evidence of quality, non-AI-slop copy. You’re a decision maker too, so check out their own content, their case studies, and their own thought leadership to assess their capabilities.

At Halt, we talk to our clients constantly, and write in their voice, day in and day out. We also know recruitment inside and out, so can translate your thoughts into content because we’ve probably been thinking about those things too!

We understand that thought leadership content writing is like ghostwriting, and needs to be a discreet operation, full of trust, and have considered layers of approval. A recruitment marketing agency shouldn’t be putting words in your mouth, but should be taking your thoughts, and editorialising them to resonate with your audience and communicate your expertise in a powerful way.
