SEO starts at the wireframe. Not after launch.
There’s a chat that happens about two weeks after a new website goes live. It goes something like this.
“The site looks great. So why has our traffic dropped?”
Because nobody asked Google what it thought. SEO got treated as a phase two. Something to sort later.
Here’s the thing though. By the time a site launches, most of its ranking potential is already decided. Not by keywords or blog posts. By design and build calls made months earlier.
What does Google actually reward? Fast load times. Clear page structure. Content people stick around for. Mobile that doesn’t make you want to lob your phone.
All of that gets decided at the design stage.
That hero video everyone loved? Two extra seconds on your load time. The clever tabbed layout hiding half your content? Google might never see it. The one-page design that “keeps things clean”? You’ve now got one URL to rank a whole business with. Good luck.
These aren’t SEO problems you fix with a plugin. They’re design problems in an SEO costume.
When web design and SEO sit at the same table from day one, the whole thing changes.
Keyword research shapes the sitemap, not the other way round. Before anything gets drawn, you know what people are searching for and which pages need to exist to answer it. Your site structure becomes a map of demand, not a copy of your org chart.
Every page gets a job. One topic, one intent, one clear action. Pages built like this rank better and convert better, because whoever lands on them finds exactly what they searched for.
Performance gets decided up front. Image budgets, fonts, animation weight. Core Web Vitals as a design constraint, not a post-launch panic.
Headings do double duty. Your H1s and H2s aren’t just there to look tidy. They’re how search engines read the page. So they get written for humans and structured for crawlers at the copy stage, not bolted on after.
And if you’re rebuilding an existing site, every old URL gets a plan before anything moves. Redirect it, keep it, or kill it on purpose. Skip that step and you can lose 30 to 50% of your organic traffic overnight, then spend six months clawing it back. We’ve seen it. It’s not fun.
Bolting SEO onto a finished site means fighting decisions that are already locked in. You can’t restructure a sitemap without redesigning the nav. You can’t fix a slow site without rebuilding templates. You can’t add depth to a design that only left room for three lines of copy.
So the retrofit becomes a compromise. A meta description here, some alt text there. Surface fixes on structural problems. Decorating a house with no foundations.
Do it the right way round and every decision compounds. The site launches fast, structured and indexed, and spends its first six months climbing instead of recovering.
Our web and SEO services are two different things, and plenty of clients take one without the other. But bring them in together on a new build and this is what you get: SEO shaping structure, content and performance from the first workshop, before a pixel goes down.
Not a pretty site that ranks, or a ranking site that happens to look good. One thing, built properly.
